A few weeks ago Obama proclaimed June Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender Pride month and yesterday he delivered remarks recounting the events that occurred at the Stonewall Inn 40 years ago. As excited and stunned as I am to see the concept of police brutality against queer and trans people explicitly named in a presidential press release and a speech–I mean, really, take a minute to think about that–I was just as disheartened to see that the first thing in the list of measures he supports to “bring the full spectrum of equal rights to LGBT Americans” in the proclamation was hate crimes laws.
